"We're singing a new way, We're opening I-s to the Present"
from "Jocks Carrying Dildos"
As I started to jot down listening notes to 1:3:1 by Dufus, the word that came up most of all, over and over, was JOYFUL. A Joyful Noise Unto the lord, that "ecstatic yawp" as Lords Lester and Byron would write, complete and utter Freedom expressed through the most pleasurable creativity. A glimpse of Heaven, which is something very very rare...and it literally fell on our doorstep.
I've been trying to shove Dufus music into words for the past several months, got going in starts and fits, but the sheer awesomeness of it all trips the tongue and boggles the brain. Here are the scattered listening notes and scrawls. More to come as they bubble up:
There are so many wonderful moments that pop up around unexpected corners (coda to Dufus)
Dufus - Lumpy Gravy/Smiley Smile Zappa/Wilsonian acapella doot-doot descending into a crazed casioid yoga rant bursting into the most joyful evil-muppet mystico-anarchist boogie.
Jahflooey - A Joyful Noise. One of the Free-est songs I've ever heard. Come Out and Play. Though I'm not one to quote User Commments or Pro Critics, "pau_fawn from Amherst, MA" in his/her remarkable review entitled "dufus "1:3:1"...beauty will save us, October 28, 2003" on amazon.com writes:
"I used to walk around with my headphones on listening to this song and I could not help but jump in every puddle and smile high to the sky. Or singing along out loud in public. I feel so natural belting out the word "jahflooey" as if it is a word for a certain kind of glory that was stolen from my vocabulary at birth, and I have finally found it again."
Jocks Carrying Dildos - disassembles rhythm into its minute beat-components - qawalli nerf
"DUFUS and the non-church of the complete dissassemblement of reality is absolutely unrecognizable newness; the dawning of a freakish age which is just upon us earth people, a looming stormblack cloud just over head.
future holds controlled chaos; a world where freedom runs open, colliding with excess of opression doled out from on high.
hailing from a city where people thrive off the failure of others, from a land called new york city comes perhaps the last blast of hope, the dufus child; a pure fountain of easily obtained retainable joy.
this music is unlike anything you have ever heard, no exaggeration. refreshing to the last kerplop, spilling down your face and shirt and pants and socks and shoes and floor and out the door onto the pavement down the gutter all the way to the burning core..."
NEWS: DUFUS is headlining the final Total Weirdness night of our WeirdFest 2004 celebration and the Flywheel in Easthampton, MA on Sunday May 30th.
